LOOSE CANNONS – ‘Loose Cannons’ (Youth Camp) NICK
It’s impossible not to feel a massive twinge of sadness listening to this record with the knowledge that Loose Cannons’ guitarist Marcus tragically passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. While Youth Camp’s Sean is at pains to stress this 7” isn’t a tribute to Marcus, it does serve as testament to the fact that, regardless of his illness, he still tried to pursue as normal a life as possible by playing in a band with his friends. And Loose Cannons were a pretty damn awesome band to be part of, as this EP demonstrates with its four tracks of passionate, energetic melodic pop-punk. Youthful energy and sincerity flows through the likes of ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Depth of Field’ as the band show their skill at making genuinely affecting, uplifting music, while final track ‘Who Knows’ is a more minimal, plaintive number blessed with some lovely shimmering melodies. A lovely little record which you should definitely pick up.
